WHY THE NAME FUZZY TOMATOES ??

This is a question that I`ve been asked....ooh...at least twice.

On that fateful day when we first went over to Woodford, we turned up with Kevin Legg`s kit, borrowed from Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre. The kit in question, is a wonderful piece of sartorial elegance, it`s green and white stripes set off beautifully by the bright red shorts and green socks.
With barely enough players and without a name, Andy Kirkup`s son, Adam was asked for his opinion, he took one look at the clothes horses masquarading as footballers in front of him and said......
"Looks like some tomatoes that have gone bad....like fuzzy tomatoes"

and a legend was born !!!!!!!!

Fuzzy Tomatoes

RISTEE TOWERS 10 TH ANNUAL 5 A SIDE  TOURNAMENT:WOODFORD  2006

Sunday JULY 16 2006

South Rushden Fuzzy Tomatoes headed over to Woodford for the fifth year in a row, this time with 8 players ! The Party in the Park yielded a player in the form of Chris, a mate of Rob D`Amore`s who also played. In addition, there were the usual stalwarts, me, Kevin Legg, (with his son Tom) Mark Brawn, Ian Fensome,(and his Brother -in- Law, Nick)
It was a chance to have a natter with some of the regular teams that come over every year, and lots of newer, younger, fitter teams.
Some memorable moments....Tom Legg`s two goals , his best, running on to a through ball from his Dad to poke home past the keeper from close range. The best goal came from Ian Fensome, and your humble scribe was pleased  to have had a small part in it. Intercepting a through ball, I turned inside beat the player and played a long pass diagonally to Mark, who was on the  edge of the box, he controlled, layed off to the incoming Ian Fensome  who hammered  it into the  top right hand corner......and then the goalie dived. Marvellous.
Thanks to all the above named players who gave up their  morning and early afternoon to take part in the proceedings.

RISTEE TOWERS 9 TH ANNUAL 5 A SIDE  TOURNAMENT:WOODFORD  2005

Fuzzy Tomatoes headed over to Woodford for the fourth year in a row, this time with 7 players ! The Party in the Park yielded a couple of players from Peterborough, Steve and Dave. In addition , there was myself, Mark Brawn, Vinny Patrick, Ian Fensome, and top South Rushden keeper Craig Fortescue.
In true South Rushden tournament tradition, we drew the opening game 0-0, against Ristee Towers Old Boys, but lost 0-2 against a strong Viking side. The Fuzzies scored their first goal of the tournament, against SALT, when a gorgeous flick on from Steve left Ian with only the goalkeeper to beat. Given that the keeper was coming out, and the goals are Samba sized , his outstanding finish was all the more remarkable. One of their shots hit the post and came out, and it was adjudged to be a goal. With referreeing like that, it was no wonder we lost 1-4.
The Fuzzies chalked up their first win with a Craig Fortescue goal against Galacticos, and then we lost 2-0 to an excellent Santos side, who normally win the competition. There was no way we could qualify for the next round, so we went for it in the last game, against one of the best teams in the competition Spanish Dons. Ian Fensome opened the scoring with a rasping shot accross the keeper and a similar effort from Dave Honnor nearly won it for us, but a lucky ricochet set up the Dons for a last second equaliser, 2-2 the result.
Good fun, an excellent laugh even in the sweltering heat, and we look forward to next year. Craig was excellent in goal and on pitch, but we came to the conclusion that Ian Fensome was our player of the tournament, his general awareness, running, tackling, and scoring of two top-drawer goals made it a foregone conclusion.

RISTEE TOWERS 8 TH ANNUAL 5 A SIDE  TOURNAMENT:WOODFORD
The redoubtable Fuzzy Tomatoes headed over to the wilds of Woodford for the third year in succession, wondering whether those who had promised to attend would arrive. As it turned out, Mark Brawn was detained by illness in the Brawn household, and Rob Davie went missing somewhere between Gloucester and Woodford. Luckily, Andy Webb (Daniel`s dad) and Ian Fensome (Matthew`s dad) arrived and we at least had a bare 5, and this included Kevin Legg`s son Thomas.
So........it was Andy Webb in goal.......me and Ian Fensome at the back.............Leggy in the centre...............Leggy Junior up front.
We drew the first game 0-0 (forgive me for being vague, but some of the team names could n`t be re-iterated in a family publication),beat some others 2-0 , goals from both Leggs, Kev`s a penalty through the keeper`s legs. Lost narrowly 1-0 to a hotly disputed goal , (striker in the keeper`s area job). As there was no sign of Robin, I sent for Grant, and when he arrived,  Kev took the opportunity to have a rest whilst Ian moved up into the centre and it was a Chambers and Chambers back two, was I proud or what???    We drew the next one 0-0 and then Andy had to go to a wedding party,so Kev went in goal. We forfeited a match against Justin`s mob. We felt that after the deluge in which everyone got wet, that with Justin and his team`s "uncompromising" manner of play and with wet conditions it was n`t worth risking Grant and Tom. They were n`t happy, but hey, they were getting a rest!!
We played the last game, lost 2-0 (another goal from inside the area) and were shaded out of a plate -position by one goal.
I must say , I was so proud of Tom and Grant, they looked composed and unfazed. There was one bit where we were doing one touch triangles all the way up the pitch, only narrowly shooting wide.  For me, it was a great experience playing in front of Andy and alongside Ian. Andy spent all the games he played in talking,
"Daz , red shirt, left shoulder" etc, made it really easy, Grant could n`t have failed to have gained a great deal from it. It was really good of Andy to come over, because he could have said that he was n`t available and then gone to his wedding party as normal. Top marks to the big fellah, who was in excellent form throughout. A big thanks to Ian Fensome for playing at such short notice, and he was excellent too.
So, a good time was had by all, and history had been made, not one father/son combo but two in the same game. There`s always next year!!!
Hopefully we`ll have a few more in the squad.
Many thanks to Ristee`s chairman : Keith Philpot, Secretary : Rosemary Hadaway, and Treasurer Becky Savage for another well run and enjoyable tournament.

2003 RISTEE TOWERS TOURNAMENT AT WOODFORD

Sunday June 29th 2003
A return to Woodford Rec for the Ristee Towers 5 a side tournament, and a gloriously sunny day. This year we had the benefit of substitutes, so we were able to roll on roll off (sometimes literally) which proved to be a God- send in the  searing heat.
The competition consisted of 2 leagues of 6 teams, the top 2 from each meeting in the semi finals of the Cup knockout, 3rd and 4th meeting in the semis of the Plate competition.
Our team consisted of : Adie Lawes
 Daryl Chambers,"Iron" Eddie Fitzpatrick,
Martin Atkinson, Robin Davie, Kevin Legg,
Martin "Joe" Woodward and Rob Atkinson .

The other teams seemed even younger than us this year , many playing for Kettering, Northampton or Rushden Youth sides, but we had our Rob who brought the team`s average age down by about 20 years. The other teams obviously play 11 a side together regularly, and it was our lack of organisation which cost us the first game against The Prem, a team from the Viking pub in Rushden. Our second game was against local boys, the Prince of Wales whom we had the good fortune to beat 2-0 with goals from Atkinson & Son, the second, and my favourite, a flick up over the defence on the right from Rob and a full -volley blasted into the net by Martin.
We lost to the talented Joy Division 2-0 and United Colors 2-1 but surprisingly beat the much fancied, by them, Dream Team 1-0 . Rob Atkinson crept in behind the defender to head past our old mate Mark Panter. They were not happy, and were in real danger of being knocked out and had to beat United to go above us into 4th place and into the Plate competition.
My comment that we were in the stronger group was borne out by the fact that Dream Team (who we beat 1-0) beat The Prem 3-2 in the final of the Plate, Panter scoring a corking winner.
In the final of the Cup, Joy Division beat Spooners 1-0 to take the top prize.
All good fun and another enjoyable afternoon`s sport in the name of char-i-dee.
Same again next year boys?.

Here`s What Happened Last Year......

The "Fuzzies" are a band of men connected with South Rushden in one way or another , who refuse to hang up their boots.
We were invited to play in a 5 a side tournament by Ristee Towers F.C. at Woodford and arrived to find the other teams were at least 15 years younger than us, but undaunted we played 5 games each of 10 minutes , and without the use of any substitutes. We did well enough to finish third in our group and qualified for the semi-final of the plate competition. We played "Thirtysomethings" who were n`t  a day over 25. They scored a quick couple of goals and then ran out of steam in the second half, and after Mark Brawn scored direct from  a corner, they were hanging on.
The whistle saved them and they progressed to win the final 3-0. We received a mention for progressing so far after not having played regularly for so long, and Andy Kirkup, having scored 10 goals won the Golden Boot competition. A good day`s sport and new friends made we rode off into the sunset.

The Players:

Adrian Lawes( father of Glen SRJFC Under 10s) made some excellent saves.
In front of him , in defence Daryl Chambers( father of Grant SRJFC Under 12s, Club Secretary and Asst Manager) and linking with midfield Mark Brawn (SRJFC coach) with Kevin Legg (Irchester Romans Asst Man.Under 12s) feeding  goal machine Andy Kirkup (SRJFC Chairman) .

Anyone know of any more tournaments in the offing???

So there you have it,let me know if you`re interested in playing this year
